DARE (Diversity and Respecting Everyone)
In 1996 the Calgary Sexual Health Centre piloted Calgary’s first ever Anti-Homophobia Program for high school students.  Using a framework of addressing system discrimination, the program was developed to achieve the following three goals:

  • To validate the experience of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered (GLBT) youth and work to end isolation;
  • To challenge heterosexual privilege;
  • And to encourage heterosexual youth to acknowledge and work towards eliminating homophobia.

The DARE (Diversity and Respecting Everyone) program is still operating in the public school system, having reached nearly 5000 students.  The program, facilitated by our educators who partner with an “out” GLBT youth volunteer, creates a safe environment, whereby myths and stereotypes about GLBT youth can be dispelled and homophobic beliefs and behaviors challenged.  Students are encouraged to ask questions of the youth volunteer
regarding his or her experiences.

Outcomes for the DARE program show an increased understanding of homophobia and requests for the program in the public school system continues to grow.
