Seniors A GoGo Project

Have you ever wondered why no one talks about sexuality after 60? A group of dedicated seniors has been working to provide insight into just that. This committed and tenacious group has been meeting, laughing and sharing their experiences with love, loss and sexuality to create a series of stage readings, monologues and digital stories.

Sexuality Education
The Calgary Sexual Health Centre provides comprehensive sexuality education to youth throughout Calgary .  Our Sexuality Education program works within the Alberta Learning Curriculum, and has been a recommended resource of the Calgary Board
of Education since 1975.

At the Calgary Sexual Health Centre we believe sexuality is a natural and healthy part of life.  We value the right of all people to make choices and respect their cultural and social differences.  The goals of our education program are to:  Reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies among the youth we see; Reduce the incidence of sexually transmitted diseases among the youth that we see; Acknowledge the negative impact of discrimination on healthy sexuality and work to reduce that impact.

The following modules represent the possible topics that we can include in our CALM program.

Anatomy and Physiology - We provide detailed and accurate information about female and male sexual and reproductive systems.  Related health care issues such as breast self-examinations, testicle self-examinations and pelvic exams are included.

Birth Control, Abstinence and Safer Sex - Participants have the opportunity to learn interactively about different methods; how they are used; where they can be accessed; how much they cost; how effective they are and whether or not they reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.  We also ensure that there is a discussion around decision making and opportunities for students to build negotiation skills.

STDs/HIV - Through discussion and an interactive game, we provide students with accurate information about STDs and the risk of transmission.  Students are given current information on how to protect themselves.  Students will also learn skills about how to negotiate safer sex if they are choosing to be sexually active.

Values - Through discussion and using a value’s continuum, we provide students with an opportunity to explore their values around issues relating to sexuality.  Students will learn skills to identify their values, voice their beliefs and challenge themselves and others respectfully.

Relationships and decision-making - Using theatre techniques, students have an opportunity to practice communicating and decision making.  We provide an opportunity to discuss a variety of relationship issues.

DARE (Diversity and Respecting Everyone) - Through the use of a story scenario, we provide youth with the opportunity to gain insight into the experience of a gay, lesbian and bisexual youth.  The discussion that follows is enriched by the participation of a Calgary Sexual Health Centre volunteer who is a gay, lesbian, or bisexual youth and who is willing to share their own experience.

The Anti-homophobia program was developed in 1996 in response to teachers and students requesting anti-homophobia education, as well as research findings of high suicide rates among gay, lesbian and bisexual youth. The goals of the program are to:  Reduce homophobia among youth; Reduce isolation for gay, lesbian and bisexual youth; Increase knowledge about local resources.
